9 Acting Duos That Played Lovers Once, and It Worked Out So Great They Decided to Do It Again

Some acting duos turn out to
be so great that they continue to appear together in their following films. For
example, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone have played lovers on the big screen 3
times, including the Oscar-winning La La Land. And Kate Winslet and Leonardo
DiCaprio worked together on Revolutionary Road after the success of Titanic.
But there are dozens of other sincere acting duos that we often forget about.
We at Bright Side are inspired
by these movie duos that show the feelings we totally believe in, no matter
what the movie or the genre is.
Jennifer
Connelly and Russell Crowe

A Beautiful Mind (2001), Noah
(2014)
The first time Russel Crowe
and Jennifer Connelly played lovers was on the set of A Beautiful Mind in 2001.
Also, the actress met her future husband there, actor Paul Bettany, who she has
been married to ever since.
13 years later, Connelly and
Crowe played the roles of husband and wife in Noah. In one of her interviews,
Jennifer said that she loved working together with Russel, “Russell is someone
who really explores the material in the rehearsal process, so we started
investigating everything together. But working with my husband is still
better.”
Anne
Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal

Brokeback Mountain (2005),
Love & Other Drugs (2010)
Jake Gyllenhaal really loves
working with Ann. In an interview, the actor told journalists that he and Anne
are able to depict several kinds of love on screen: romantic, family, and
friendship.
Ann, in turn, is grateful to
Jake for the support in the difficult and very open scenes in Love & Other
Drugs. Both actors had partners while working on the film, which only made the
process harder. But Jake and Ann continued their friendship after the shooting
process and that has made them much closer and turned them into real friends.
Rachel
McAdams and Owen Wilson
9 Acting Duos That Played Lovers Once, and It Worked Out So Great They Decided to Do It Again
Wedding
Crashers (2005), Midnight in Paris (2011)
Rachel McAdams and Owen Wilson
first played lovers in the comedy film Wedding Crashers that got mostly
negative reviews from the critics. And Midnight in Paris by Woody Allen was
incredibly successful: the movie team created something like a tour guide
around the most romantic and significant places in the French capital.
By the way, during the
shooting process, all the tabloids were filled with speculations about the
relationship between Rachel and Owen. But in fact, Rachel was in a relationship
with a different colleague — Michael Sheen.
Rosario
Dawson and Will Smith
9 Acting Duos That Played Lovers Once, and It Worked Out So Great They Decided to Do It Again
Men in Black II (2002), Seven
Pounds (2008)
Making the sci-fi Men in Black
II was pretty easy for the actors, but when making Seven Pounds, Smith had
trouble: he couldn’t stop being nervous before the bed scene with Rosario
because he kept thinking about his wife Jada. Rosario even made a funny comment
that if Jada was invited to the set, it would make things much easier for Will.
Will laughs about it,
“Even though it wasn’t very serious, I decided to share my feelings with
my wife. And she said something like, “Don’t make me ashamed, man, go and show
everyone how great you can work.”
Diane
Lane and Richard Gere
9 Acting Duos That Played Lovers Once, and It Worked Out So Great They Decided to Do It Again
The Cotton Club (1984),
Unfaithful (2002), Nights in Rodanthe (2008)
Diane and Richard absolutely
adore each other: they fool around during shootings and joke with each other
during interviews. For example, after the premiere of Nights in Rodanthe, Gere
made a joke that he kept sending Diane different scripts, but she kept refusing
from doing a movie with him. And Lane thinks that together they make a far
stronger impression than when they are in different films.
Gere and Lane have appeared in
3 films in 24 years. They gave all they had to all the roles, and in one of the
interviews, Lane admitted that all 3 times, she was charmed by Gere and there
was definitely some kind of chemistry between them.
Jennifer
Lopez and Ben Affleck
9 Acting Duos That Played Lovers Once, and It Worked Out So Great They Decided to Do It Again
Gigli (2003), Jersey Girl
(2004)
The movie duo of Lopez and
Affleck in Gigli was not accepted well by the critics or the public: the film
received 6 Golden Raspberry anti-awards, including Worst Film, Worst Director,
Worst Actor, and Worst Actress. At about the same time, Jennifer and Ben
canceled their engagement just one day before the wedding and Lopez herself had
a very hard time dealing with breaking up.
And the film that was released
just one year later, Jersey Girl, was more successful but Ben Affleck’s
on-screen wife, Jennifer Lopez, dies at the very beginning of the film and then
there is a relationship developing between Ben Affleck’s and Liv Tyler’s
characters. Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck were not able to support a friendly
relationship and have not appeared on the screen together ever since.
Amy
Adams and Christian Bale
9 Acting Duos That Played Lovers Once, and It Worked Out So Great They Decided to Do It Again
American Hustle (2013), Vice
(2018)
After Vice was released on the
big screen, Amy Adams admitted that in every film she does with Christian,
there is a scene where she loudly tells him off. Amy laughs, “I yell at him all
the time.”
The films the actors did
together are incredibly successful, both American Hustle and Vice had very good
reviews from the critics and Christian got an Oscar for his role in The
Fighter.
Julia
Roberts and Clive Owen
9 Acting Duos That Played Lovers Once, and It Worked Out So Great They Decided to Do It Again
Closer (2004), Duplicity
(2009)
During the shooting process of
the complicated drama Closer, Owen had to portray a psychological sadist that
kept tormenting the character played by Julia, but the actors still felt a
mutual respect toward each other.
Since then, the actors have
been friends. And are, in fact, so close that Clive himself insisted on Julia
taking part in Duplicity and he invited her to the team. And George Clooney
made sure that Owen got the role: he even planned the meeting between Owen and
director Tony Gilroy.
Reese
Witherspoon and Paul Rudd
9 Acting Duos That Played Lovers Once, and It Worked Out So Great They Decided to Do It Again
Overnight Delivery (1998), How
Do You Know (2010)
Reese and Paul showed teenage
love onscreen in 1998, and 12 years later, they met again on the set of the
comedy How Do You Know.
Both films got pretty mixed
reviews from the critics, but the simple comedies with Witherspoon and Rudd are
the best things to watch on a cold autumn evening.
What movie couples do you like
more than anyone else? Do you think that the actors who are really married find
it easier to play the role of lovers on the screen or does it only make the job
harder?
