When you’re at the mercy of people, you have no choice.
I witnessed a deaf and mute teenager on the highway. He was about 14years and looked hungry in the faded uniform of the school for the deaf and mute he ‘representing’. He came to a driver of a commercial bus, during traffic, to solicit for help with a ‘donation form’ – a piece of paper on which people give alms by entering their names and signing (some of us used it in high school).
The driver instantly entered his name, amount to be given and signed on the form. He returned the form and handed a NGN50 note to this dumb boy. Boy steps away in gratitude only to return back instantly and refund the money to the driver because its back has a bad cello tape across it. Driver was stunned!
Dumb boy has a choice even though he could not verbally express it. Driver got angry at the display of ingratitude, yanked the money from the boy and drove on. Boy learnt his lesson; his eyes wasn’t blind to see that he made a mistake. He showed up on the other side of the road as driver made a turn, with a pleading expression that begged for the money back. Driver tossed it to the ground and sped off.
The boy came over and picked the money at the same time careful not to get run over by cars.

In life, if you’re at the mercy of people, your choices are limited or non-existent. Until you’re responsible for yourself, others determine your worth.
