Depression is a common mental disorder that affects people of all ages. The disorder is so common that most people have either experienced it themselves or have a near relative who has suffered from it. Occupational Depression is, therefore, a form of depression that is majorly due to the conditions faced at work.
Causes:
Nature of occupation (lawyers, dentists, artists, machinists, auto mechanics, carpenters)
Poor working conditions (shift work, long working hours, insufficient reward, irritants, odors, extreme temperature, severe noise)
Results:
Impacted vocational performance by Presenteeism
Decreased concentration
Reduced motivation
Decision errors
Absenteeism (non-attendant, late arrival or leaving earlier than usual)
Decreased self-esteem
Chronic disability
Suicide attempt
Job loss
Unemployment
Unhappiness
Fatigue
Excessive forgetfulness
Irritability
Lack of enthusiasm
Social withdrawal
Tearfulness
Solution:
Good working conditions (adequate levels of light, clean air, minimal noise, comfortable temperature)
Jobs that offer an opportunity to use and develop skills
Jobs that offer variety and some input into the design and/or creation of the work
Supportive bosses
Therapy
